Let me tell you about one of the many talented students I have had the immense pleasure of teaching, Brianna Murgi. Brianna is a Senior student who just passed a rather challenging certification through the American Council on Exercise (ACE). The certification is in Personal Training and is nationally recognized as a quality certification within the field. She voluntarily undertook the endeavor and passed with an excellent score.

Our ES majors have the option of doing a Practicum or sitting for a quality certification which is in the areas of health/fitness/strength/conditioning, etc., and qualifies within the guidelines of our program. Only ‘Gold Standard’ certifications are acceptable.  Those offered by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Society of Exercise Physiologists (ASEP), the American Council on Exercise (ACE), or the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) are the standards.

It is a gutsy attempt as the student must pass the exam in order to earn the 3 credit hours for the Practicum course. This, of course, takes great confidence, a solid knowledge base, and the cost of the study materials and exam fee. In addition, the travel to the site where the exam is provided and the day/time factors must all be endured. It requires many hours of study for preparation.

She is a stellar student and fine human being who has earned my respect and has certainly been a pleasure to have in a classroom (as most of my students are!)
